20% reduction in energy consumption next year is expected to be achieved

Xie Zhenhua, deputy director of the National Development and Reform Commission, said at the ministerial meeting of the Asia Pacific Clean Development and Climate Partnership held recently that the goal of reducing energy consumption by 20% proposed by China next year is expected to be achieved.

Xie Zhenhua said that despite difficulties, efforts to reduce energy consumption by 20% by 2010 are expected to be achieved. The data shows that by the first half of this year, the energy consumption per unit of GDP in China has dropped by more than 13%. By the end of 2008, the outdated production capacities of ironmaking, steelmaking, cement and coke were respectively over 60 million tons, more than 40 million tons, 140 million tons and over 60 million tons, and more than 54 million kilowatts of small thermal power units were shut down.
