Breakthrough in Meteorological Remote Sensing Instrument Technology in China

Recently, 25 predecessors of the civil aerospace research project undertaken by the China Aerospace Science and Industry Second Institute as an overall unit have passed the review and acceptance of the National Bureau of Science, Technology and Industry, which indicates that China is in the field of active satellite-based meteorological remote sensing instruments. A major breakthrough was made.

It is reported that the satellite-borne precipitation radar belongs to the family of active microwave remote sensors and can perform three-dimensional detection of rainfall in a large area throughout the day and in all weather conditions. The successful development of the first prototype of a spaceborne precipitation measurement radar project in China achieved the first three-dimensional remote sensing measurement of active cloud-rain in China. The overall performance of the radar reached and exceeded the level of similar foreign radars, filling China’s active on-board satellites.
