After evaluating a number of vendors, Ocean University chose Caterpillar's two MaK 9 M 25 C and one MaK 6 M 20 C generator set to power Dongfanghong 3.
“The DNV GL Silent-R has very strict limits on all equipment on board, whether it is underwater noise or structural noise,†said Stephan Kroening, a noise vibration expert at Caterpillar. “We used a double compartment. The vibration arrangement allows the engine and cabin floor to be fully isolated for ultra-quiet effect."

According to the plan, the MaK generator set will be delivered to the shipyard by the end of this year. Upon completion, Dongfanghong 3 will be the first ship built in China to receive DNV GL Silent-R certification.
Of course, this is not the first ship powered by MaK and able to meet such harsh conditions.
