Agence France-Presse quoted a South Korean welfare organization on Monday as saying on Monday that North Korea has reactivated the ban on Japanese cars and banned it from going on roads. According to reports, this reflects the tension between North Korea and Japan.
South Korea’s “Friends†organization, which is based in North Korea, said that the ban began in 2007. However, since 70% of North Korea's domestic cars were Japanese cars, the ban was soon lifted. The organization said that North Korea restarted the ban in June this year and asked its local officials to inspect every factory and state-owned enterprise to ensure that it had the news of each Japanese car. According to reports, the ban will continue until October 8, 2011. All Japanese cars except heavy trucks are prohibited.
Li Shengyong, head of the "Friends" organization, said that North Korea's re-implementation of the ban indicates the current tension between Japan and North Korea. After North Korea conducted its second nuclear test and rocket launch this year, Japan stepped up its pressure on North Korea and began a full-scale export ban on North Korea in June.
