The 10 millionth Bosch start/stop starter off the assembly line

Recently, Bosch's 10 million start/stop starters worldwide were rolled out at the factory in Hildesheim, Germany. Since the batch production in 2007, this fuel-saving technology has brought more and more orders. Dr. Ulrich Kirschner, President of Bosch's starter motor and generator division, said: “At present, about one in two new cars produced in Western Europe have a start/stop system installed, and many models have already adopted the system as a standard. Of course, the global market trend of significantly reducing carbon emissions has further promoted the promotion and development of start/stop systems. The reason for this technology's great success is actually very simple. "This technology has a very good price/performance ratio while significantly improving fuel economy," Dr. Kirschner added. The Bosch start/stop system has been used by almost all European car manufacturers, including compact cars, limousines, light trucks and even powerful sports cars. In addition, the United States and China are also increasingly interested in this fuel-efficient technology.

In the new European driving cycle test, the Bosch start/stop system can reduce fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions by an average of about 5%; in its urban testing phase, CO2 emission reduction and fuel economy can be up to about 8%. In the crowded city traffic, especially during peak hours, the technology has greater fuel-saving potential. The entire system runs automatically and analyzes all kinds of sensor information before starting to ensure that the engine starts normally. For example, the battery level can be determined by the battery sensor, and the start/stop system will shut down the engine only when the vehicle is stopped, only when the power is sufficient to ensure that the engine starts up again quickly. Another example is in the vehicle cabin temperature: if the cab temperature is too cold or too hot, the engine will continue to run to provide air conditioning energy until the cab reaches the desired temperature. Finally, in order to stabilize the voltage of the electrical system at the start of the vehicle (at which time the engine is off), DC/AC converters are also installed in the system to ensure that the operation of the radio, navigation system, or speakerphone is not affected.

Even when driving, zero fuel consumption can be achieved

In order to further reduce fuel consumption and reduce carbon dioxide emissions, Bosch engineers continue to work hard to extend engine shutdown time. One of the applications is to shut down the engine during braking to full stoppage of the vehicle. Another application is to briefly shut down the engine while the vehicle is running without acceleration. This technology is expected to come out in 2016. . Even if the engine is turned off or closed for a long time by the start/stop system, the safety and comfort of the vehicle can still be guaranteed. Kirschner said: "According to different types of driving, the upgraded Bosch start/stop system will further increase fuel economy by about 10% on the original fuel economy."
