Traditional car engines seek environmental protection

When it comes to energy conservation and emission reduction in the automotive industry, people first think of new energy vehicles. In the face of increasingly severe environmental pressures, new energy vehicles such as pure electric vehicles, hybrid vehicles, hydrogen fuel, and solar cells have all accelerated the pace of industrialization. However, due to the lack of core technologies, infrastructure construction has not yet started, and cost pressures and other factors, although new energy vehicles have great potential in energy conservation and emission reduction, but in a certain period of time, can not change the traditional market dominant position of cars.

“By 2020, new energy vehicles will only have a 5% market share. The internal combustion engine power system will remain the main driving force for automobiles in the next 30-50 years.” Xing Min, Executive Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of China Internal Combustion Engine Industry Association Say.

In fact, the internal combustion engine is still the most thermally-efficient mobile power machine available today. China has become the world’s largest automobile production and sales country and the largest manufacturer of internal combustion engines. Internal combustion engines consume more than 60% of China’s oil, and its energy-saving emission reduction is even more important.

On May 8, 2010, a total of 21 domestic automobile and engine-dominated enterprises, 7 universities, 4 research institutes, and China National Internal Combustion Engine Industry Association had established a “Strategic Alliance for Energy Saving and Environmental Protection Engine Industry Technology Innovation” in Tianjin. The “Industrial Combustion Industry Innovation Alliance”) seeks common technical breakthroughs in traditional energy-saving and environmental-friendly internal combustion engines. Experts at the meeting calculated an account for the reporter: If the traditional internal combustion engine is reduced by 1 gram of fuel consumption rate, only based on the inventory of existing cars in China, the fuel savings in a year can reach several million tons.

Pressure from Euro 3 to Euro 6

"In the past few years, the internal combustion engine industry has not been vocal, and the concept of energy-saving and emission reduction has mostly been used in new energy (electric) vehicles," said Gong Ke, the first chairman of the council of the IC Industry Innovation Council and president of Tianjin University.

According to statistics, among the 413 million yuan earmarked for the first batch of projects under the National 863 Program “Energy-saving and New Energy Vehicles”, the cost for the research and development of high-performance internal combustion engines with energy saving and environmental protection is only 16 million yuan.

From the perspective of the development of advanced countries in the world, the internal combustion engine industry has entered an era of high technology, high input, and high output. At present, there is a big gap between China's internal combustion engine industry and large multinational corporations. It is understood that compared with the advanced level in foreign countries, China's vehicle engine emissions are lagging behind by 1 to 2 stages, and the fuel consumption is 10% to 15% higher. The emission of nitrogen oxides and particulate matter of the main atmospheric pollutants in the exhaust gas is 2.78 of current European standards, respectively. Times and 10 times. Domestic engines will face the challenges of high standards of technology and regulations.

“The domestic automobile engines are mostly imported or joint ventures, and most of the profits are monopolized by foreign countries.” Xing Min said, “The domestic engines are very different from foreign countries in some key technologies. Domestic joint ventures are not willing to use domestic engines. The export of domestically-made vehicles also has difficulties due to issues such as engine performance, etc., when entering the international market, especially in EU countries."

“At present, the emission of new cars produced by most domestic car companies can only reach Euro 3 and Euro 4 standards. On September 1, 2009, the European Union has already implemented a more stringent Euro 5 emission standard.” Xing Min said, “Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, etc. National ministries and commissions have adopted the mandatory national standard “Method and Indicators for Evaluating Passenger Vehicle Fuel Consumption” in principle, and China’s emission regulations will be in line with international standards by 2015. This means that in the next five years, the Chinese internal combustion engine industry will face current 3 The huge technological leap from standard to Euro 6 standard."

The traditional engine emission reduction potential is huge

According to the data from the China Internal Combustion Engine Industry Association, in 2009, China's internal combustion engine production and sales increased by 10% year-on-year, with a total output of 67 million units and a total power of 1.13 billion kilowatts. The financial crisis did not affect the internal combustion engine industry.

An industry source told reporters that domestic automakers have not fully grasped the core technologies of new energy, and at the same time, the number of traditional fuel vehicles sold each year is still rising. If we ignore this trend, China’s energy consumption and environmental pollution will certainly face tremendous pressure.

In fact, while the development of new energy power technology is in full swing, the traditional engine industry is also seeking more environmental protection and energy saving. According to Gong Ke, at the end of 2009, Guangxi Yuchai cooperated with Tianjin University to launch two low-carbon, energy-efficient and high-efficiency engines that have achieved two-stage pressurization. One of them has been successfully loaded and commissioned, achieving low-carbon emission, energy saving, and With the miniaturization of engine applications, each vehicle will reduce its CO2 emissions by at least 5 tons per year. According to authoritative statistics, at the end of 2009, there were nearly 13.7 million vehicles loaded in the country. If all of these energy efficient engines are installed, CO2 emissions will be reduced by 68.5 million tons per year. Gong Ke said that in the future, the internal combustion engine industry innovation alliance will further give play to the advantages of school-enterprise cooperation and accelerate the commercialization of scientific and technological achievements.
