The telepresence robots are now deployed to prisons in South Korea to help stop the violence between prisoners who committed suicide and prisoners.
Beginning next March, three back-guard robots will join the ranks of prison guards to make prison guards more alert. The project is 100 million KRW (864,000 U.S. dollars) and is organized by the Korean Ministry of Knowledge Economy. These robots are mainly responsible for patrolling at night and providing some remote information. The robot is 5 feet high, with four wheels and the ability to speak. It was jointly developed by the Electronic Telecommunications Institute (ETRI) and the manufacturer SMEC. It also has cameras and sensors so it can identify some information, such as violence and suicide, and remind people to guard. The researchers said they are now refining their details to make it look more friendly. When an inmate is in a life-threatening situation or is seriously ill, he or she can reach out to help him quickly.
